An Alaskan Cruise; Is this your Dream Vacation?

Most Alaskan Cruisers will take a 7 day cruise of the Inside passage only, but the ultimate Alaskan Dream Vacation will include both a cruise and land component.  Your typical Inside Passage cruise will consist of visits to 3 Alaskan ports such as Ketchican, Juneau and Skagway as well as two major Glacier Viewing Experiences.

In Ketchican, enjoy shopping along historic Creek St.  Or visit Saxman Village for its traditional dance and totem carving. Fans of the TV Show “Deadliest Catch” will want to tour one of the crab boats used in Season Two.

Juneau; Alaska’s state capital is accessible only by boat or plane. Be sure to take the Mt. Robert’s Tramway for spectacular views of the Mendanhall Glacier and surrounding port.  Other excursions include a Rainforest Canopy and Zipline Tour, Sport Fishing and Whale Watching to name a few.

Skagway, a historic gold rush town and is the most northerly point on the Inside passage.  Fantastic excursions can be taken including the White Pass Scenic Railway, a vintage rail car that climbs 3000 ft over 20 miles of steep slopes with cliff hanging turns.  Or learn to “mush” on an exciting Dog Sledding adventure.

Glacier Bay National Park will be one of the most memorable days of your Alaskan Cruise. The park is made up of 3.3 million acres with 18 glaciers that reach the ocean. Rich in wildlife including colony’s of nesting seabirds, migrating ducks and geese, whales, porpoises, sea lions and seals.

If you extend your cruise with a land component, Princess Cruise Lines would be my recommendation.  Unique advantages such as their Direct to Wilderness rail program, Princess owned Wilderness Lodges with prime locations and destinations off the beaten path.

The highlight is a visit to Denali National Park, home to North America’s tallest peak; Mt. Mckinley at 20,320 ft. Six million acres of forest, tundra, glaciers and mountains as well as abundant wildlife.  The Denali Princess Wilderness Lodge is located near the park entrance and offers guests activities such as a Jet Boating, Dog Sledding, Scenic Float Trip and Flight-seeing adventures.

Mt. Mckinley Princess Wilderness Lodge, also located in Denali National Park, is more secluded and has a true wilderness feel.  Enjoy panoramic vistas in every direction from the large deck and great room.  Guests may enjoy activities such as Jet boating, guided nature walks, Horseback trail rides, and Alaska Sport fishing.

Outside of Denali National Park, Princess offers 2 other unique destinations; The Copper River and the Kenai Peninsula.  The Copper Princess Wilderness Lodge is located in the interior of Alaska, overlooking America’s largest National Park, Wrangell-St. Elias.   The Kenai Princess Wilderness Lodge is situated on the Kenai Peninsula, also known as Alaska’s Playground.  Both are smaller, boutique properties offering spectacular vistas and a true mountain lodge experience.

An Alaskan Cruise Tour is suitable for all ages and activity levels.  Enjoy it with friends, family and multi-generational groups.  The best values include travelling during May and September, booking early to take advantage of Princess’ Alaska Wilderness Sale, and the longer the cruise tour, the better value on a per night basis.
